UnionPay issues overseas card usage tips

Today UnionPay issued overseas card usage tips to introducenew developments of overseas card usage service recently. It’s suggested that cardholders should use UnionPay card (with only UnionPay logo on card face and card number starting with 62) abroad and make settlement via UnionPay network, in which case currency conversion fee accounting for 1%-2% of card swiping amount could be exempted. Besides, cardholders using UnionPay card abroad could also enjoy more exclusive privileges.
 
UnionPay card could be used in 117 overseas countries and regions
At present, UnionPay overseas acceptance network has basically covered countries and regions that Chinese people often visit for travel, business or study.
 
Especially in outbound tourism destinations that Chinese often visit such as Taiwan, Macao, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia, it’s very convenient to use UnionPay card. ATMs accepting UnionPay card have basically realized full coverage in Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Over 90% of merchants in Hong Kong and Macao could accept UnionPay card, more than half of merchants could accept UnionPay card in many Southeast Asian countries, while Singapore and Vietnam also realizes card swiping service on taxi. UnionPay card could be used at over eighty percent of ATMs and half of merchants, and on high-speed rails and taxies in Taiwan. In Korea, UnionPay credit card can be used at all acceptance merchants to perform signature payment without the need to enter password, and UnionPay debit card or UnionPay credit card could be used to perform password payment at hundreds of thousands of merchants. In business districts that Chinese tourists frequently visit such as Ginza and Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan, UnionPay card can be used at more than half of ATMs and merchants. At present, UnionPay credit card issued by 14 commercial banks can use signature payment without entering password.
 
In major tourism cities in Europe and the U.S., almost all well-known merchants favored by Chinese tourists could accept UnionPay card. Basically all ATMs in the UK, Switzerland, Austria and Portugal have realized the acceptance of UnionPay card and the number of merchants accepting purchasevia swiping UnionPay is also increasing. Many merchants also hired shop assistants who speak Chinese to provide service to Chinese tourists. UnionPay card could be used at 90% of ATMs in the U.S., with the scope of merchants expanding from department stores, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and brand chain stores to taxies and subways, and acceptance merchants exceeding 50%.Cardholders can use UnionPay debit card to perform password payment and UnionPay credit card to perform signature payment in the U.S. as in Korea.
 
In other parts of the world, such as the Middle East, Africa and Oceania, the application scope of UnionPay card is also expanding continuously. For example in the UAE that millions of Chinese people visit or stop by each year, UnionPay card could be conveniently used at well-known local merchants and ATMs. Besides, payment for taxi fare by swiping card has been realized in Sydney and Perth of Australia.

Overseas UnionPay card featured service and guarantee
Overseas UnionPay card merchants and networking ATMs accepting UnionPay card will generally be posted with UnionPay logo and an increasing number of ATMs are beginning to install Chinese operation interface. Even if you don’t see UnionPay logo, you may ask the cashier if UnionPay card can be used as some of the outlets accepting UnionPay card may not have posted the logo due to the rapid expansion.

Hong Kong International Airport has opened UnionPay platinum VIP lounge to provide more exclusive and considerate services to UnionPay cardholders. UnionPay platinum VIP lounge at Singapore ION Orchard (ION Orchard Shopping Centre) will be launched at the beginning of next year.
 
Under emergency circumstances such as being unable to use UnionPay cards or card lost or stolen abroad, cardholders can call local UnionPay free service hotline in the country or region that they are in and obtain emergency cash assistance. At present, this service has been launched in 34 outlets located in 17 countries frequently visited by Chinese tourists.
 
UnionPay reminds you of card use safety abroad
Cardholders should keep in mind card use safety while enjoying overseas payment convenience and premium service of UnionPay card. You shall properly keep your personal information when swiping card at merchants or withdrawing cash at ATMs, and remain highly alert to any phone call or SMS requesting transfer and asking for password. ATMs posted with notice of Maintenance or Out of Service” should also be watched out for. You could call the issuer’s overseas service hotline for help if necessary.
