Since 2004, the network of UnionPay has covered more countries and regions including Asia Pacific Region, Europe, Americas, Africa and Australia.
UnionPay also cooperates with Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Cards Company and South Korea’s BC Cards Company to issue local currency credit cards of UnionPay standard. UnionPay will not only become a bankcard organization serving China, but also an international one serving a growing number of countries and regions.
Development of Hong Kong, Macau and overseas bankcard markets
In response to the economic development trend and Chinese people’s steps of “Going Global”, UnionPay seized the chance of the signing of CEPA and started from Hong Kong market to push the globalization of UnionPay card into a large scale development track.
In order to meet the growing demand for card use of the Chinese in overseas business, travel and study, and to extend the services of domestic commercial banks abroad via UnionPay network, UnionPay is dedicated to the construction of an international acceptance network. Up to November 2009, UnionPay cards have been accepted in 125 countries and regions outside China. Meanwhile, UnionPay also actively promotes issuance of UnionPay standard cards overseas, with a goal of providing payment convenience for foreigners in their work, travel and study in China. Presently, financial institutions in 10 countries and regions have officially issued local-currency UnionPay standard cards. UnionPay cards are not only well accepted by the domestic cardholders, but also highly appreciated by cardholders in more and more countries and regions. UnionPay card has become a primary choice for domestic cardholders in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and so on.
