Republic of Slovakia is in the inland of middle Europe. It has an area of 49,034 square kilometers, and a population of 5.4 million. It is adjacent to Czech in the northwest, Poland in the North, Hungary in the south, and Austria in the southeast. On Mar. 29th, 2004, it joined NATO. And from May 1st, 2004, it becomes a member of the Europe Union. On Dec. 21st, 2007, it became a member of Schengen Agreement. On Jan. 1st, 2009, it joined the Euro zone.

The capital is Bratislava which is located at the foot of the small Carpathians over the side of Danube. With a population of 428,000 (2006), it is the biggest inland harbor, and the biggest political, economic, cultural and petrochemical industry center.

Mountains occupy most of the territory. And there are over 160 lakes around the country. The beautiful lakes are not only tourist attractions but also important basis for developing freshwater fishery and agriculture. The middle and northern part is the Tatra Mountain which belongs to the Carpathians. With beautiful scenery of secluded valleys and deep lakes, it is a good place for skiing in winter. The highest peak of Slovakia, the Gerlachovský štít (2655 metres) is located in this area. The southern part is a plain. The biggest river which runs through Slovakia is the Danube
