The Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein), a small landlocked country located in central Europe, is sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria, becoming one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world. As a mountainous constitutional monarchy with only an entire area of about 160 square kilometers, Liechtenstein is nestled on the eastern bank of the upper reaches of the Rhine in the Alps in central Europe, bordering Switzerland to the west and Austria to the east. With a total of 34,294 people, Liechtenstein has the fourth smallest population across Europe, just next to Vatican, Monaco and San Marino. About one third of its residents are foreigners, mainly from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. German is the official language of Liechtenstein.
Liechtenstein has no Customs and National Defense. It even has no currency of its own (using Swiss francs), but it boasts an extremely high level of national income, with per capita GDP amounting to over US 50,000 dollars. No wonder this small rich country is well-known for its splendid Alps scenery, tax haven and high living quality.
Vaduz, seated in the mountains-surrounding basin in the eastern bank of the Rhine, is the political, economic and cultural centers as well as the largest city and tourist center across the country.
