Gambia is located in Western Africa, which borders the Atlantic to the west. It is poor in resources and economically underdeveloped. It mainly relies on tourism followed by entrepot trade and agriculture. Tourism is its pillar industry. The tourist season starts from November to March of the next year. The tourists mainly come from Europe, most of whom come from Northern European countries. Tourism has also boosted the local hospitality industry. Hotels, bars and restaurants gather along the coast and area is ablaze with lights and bustling with noise and excitement every night. The entrepot trade mainly relies on the customs duties collected on the container transshipment at the seaport. However, as the neighboring countries continue to lower their customs duties and Gambia increases the customs, Gambia has lost its advantages as a low-duty port, resulting in serious drop in cargo transportation and recession in the market of Banjul. Gambia mainly bases its agriculture on the cultivation of rice and corn. However, the land utilization rate is rather low because the local residents are indolent. As a result, a large tract of land is left unused and deserted, and the limited cultivated land is only planted in rainy seasons. Therefore, Gambia is not self-sufficient in food supply and mainly relies on import.
